There’s certainly plenty to love about Munich. Home of the Oktoberfest, Siemens and BMW, the capital city of Bavaria is steeped in tradition and culture. And when it comes to food you certainly won’t go hungry in this city. So hang on for the ride as we explore our top food picks.
Whether you prefer hanging out in the Marienplatz, seeking out the shadier places in the English Garden during the summer or flocking with the masses to the huge beer tents of the Oktoberfest, there’s almost certainly something for everyone here in this city. In fact, you will never get bored here whether you prefer museums, cultural attractions or just chilling you can find it in Munich.
Now, let’s talk food. Bavaria has more to offer than just large steins of beer and soft pretzels studded with salt. So, let’s take a tour of some of the hidden gems on offer as we enjoy both traditional and modern fare from morning to night with our top food picks for you.
Breakfast:
Our first stop was at Mr. Pancake located at Gabelsbergerstr. 34. This American style breakfast diner offers a tasty selection of pancakes with yummy toppings. Though the place is not large it is cosy, friendly and definitely worth the effort for a great and filling start to your day.
Prices are very reasonable, ranging from 8.50 to 11 Euros for pancakes and the staff are very friendly.
Our Top Recommendation: try the Mr. Blueberry
Price Range: Medium

After breakfast we wandered around the nearby university area and made our way slowly down towards the Odeonsplatz.
The central parts of Munich are mostly within fairly easy walking distance but if you get too tired there is an extremely clean and efficient public transportation system with buses, metro (known in Germany as U-bahn), as well as taxis.
Lunch:
By the time we had wandered towards the Marienplatz we were starting to get hungry again! We decided that we wanted something traditional for lunch and headed towards Andy’s Krablergarten. This restaurant with beer garden is well-known for its schnitzel and let’s face it who doesn’t like a good schnitzel!
The schnitzels are normally made from pork but for 1 Euro extra you can request chicken if you prefer. All schnitzels come with a choice of potato salad, French fries, rice, pan-fried potatoes or noodles.
Our Top Recommendation: try the schnitzel topped with fried egg
Price Range: Medium

After lunch we decided it was time for a nap!
Dinner:
In the early evening after exploring more of central Munich we headed back towards the Maxvostadt area to an Indian restaurant that we had been told about.
While perhaps not as well-known as some Indian restaurants Shiva is a cosy place to eat with both indoor and street seating and we found the food to be nicely prepared and tasty.
Our Top Recommendation: try the Shahi Thali (for two)
Price Range: Medium

5 Useful Tips To Know
- Tipping in Germany is different from the U.S. or U.K. In Germany, you normally round up the bill rather than giving a set percentage. For example, if your meal came to 12.50 Euro you would usually round it up to 13 Euro. However, as in most places it is expected to leave a decent tip and we usually go by the 12-15% rule
- Most restaurants have a menu available in English or at least a bilingual German-English version
- Depending on the type of restaurant the waiting staff may not speak English or only very basic English. We never found this to be a problem since pointing usually gets the message across no matter the place
- Don’t expect American style service. In Germany, staff can come across as aloof but again it depends on the type of restaurant and food being served
- Reservations are not normally needed but if in doubt call ahead to make sure (but be aware of tip 3 above)
